UFC 216 is happening in Las Vegas on Saturday. Although, there was some discussion on whether they would cancel or switch to a different city because of the recent shooting. But the event is still on, and the UFC and many people in and around the organization have pledged funds to the victims. A lot of MMA history is entrenched in Las Vegas, and it hit the company and its fighters pretty hard. I’m sure they will have a lot of info at the event on how to help out. The fights are still on, so let’s dig in.
The headliner of this event is a fantastic one. Tony Ferguson vs Kevin Lee for the lightweight interim belt. Both of these guys are killers. Both are on amazing win streaks (5 for Lee, 9 for Ferguson). When the fight was first announced, I immediately gave Ferguson the benefit. He has more experience in general, and has fought better fighters. ….But Lee just has that something that makes me pause. I don’t know if it’s the confidence; I don’t know if it’s the matchup, but SOMETHING is there that makes me feel like Lee has a good chance at victory, even though I give Ferguson the advantage in pretty much every area. Ferguson also likes to make believe he is a bowling ball at times:
Lee has this uncanny ability to find people’s back, though. And he seems to enjoy being there:
I really don’t know how this is going to play out. My brain tells me to go with Ferguson, but my cynical asshole tells me to go with Lee because he wants to call out Conor McGregor after the fight. Of course he does, and the shit talking would be epic, but Ferguson is a god damned terror. (As of the time I posted this article, Lee was off by 1 pound at the weigh-in, and has an hour to shed an additional pound. Will try to update.)
Even with AAALLLLL that going down in the main event, the co-main event is where my heart is.
That’s right. Demetrius Johnson is looking to break Anderson Silva’s record of ten straight title defenses. I know there are some out there that don’t seem to like the guy. I say go eat a dick. He’s great. Probably my favorite fighter. The fact that he is ALSO a gamer and all around decent guy tips the scale in his favor. His opponent, Ray Borg, will have a size advantage, and maybe an age advantage, except that Demetrius Johnson is a robot soooo….. I’m just so scared about this fight. I want Mighty Mouse to break the record so badly, but I feel like Ray Borg will not give one fuck and he will attack like a god damn madman. So who knows. (Please be Mighty Mouse)
Of course, there’s TONS more action on this card, and I feel like I would be doing the world a disservice if I didn’t post Lando Vannata’s wheel kick win.
But let’s take a moment to appreciate the heavyweight division, shall we? Here we have former champ Fabricio Werdum going up against Derrick Lewis. I have no fucking clue what’s going to happen here. Werdum has been fighting since he was a baby, I’m pretty sure, and Lewis can punch someone in the toe and knock them out. You have to think Werdum has the advantage on the ground, and if he fights smart, he can avoid Lewis’ power. So it may actually end up a bit of a boring fight, until you remember Werdum’s flying knee to Mark Hunt, and Lewis’ grazing knockout of Travis Browne. Just don’t be boring, heavyweights. Your division NEEDS some spice.
……Sure let’s go with that.
(This is where I will slyly insert a side note on how another heavyweight on the card has the best nickname in fighting. Yeah, Mark “The Hand Of” Godbeer is just perfect.)
Oh you need more shit? How bout Baneil Dariush vs Evan Dunham? Thales Leites vs Brad Tavares? Pearl Gonzalez vs Poliana Botelho? What more do you want from me?!?! Just watch the damn fights!!!
