I have to preface this with saying I know full well what I’m about to do. I’m going to take a snapshot of a team I love and make it something it probably isn’t, and with every expectation that I will likely jinx whatever good situation I find myself in……BUT…..if you are a long time Saints fan, you know EXACTLY where I’m coming from. What place is that, you ask? It’s a little place called “I can’t watch this anymore”, because that’s what Saints fans end up saying a lot of the time whilst watching our team.
After the first two games of the season, I figured I’d have to get out my paper bag as usual and hide my face like most other seasons….
It was easy to see why I might think that. Any team that makes Sam Bradford look like a good QB is bound to fail, right? Then came the Patriots, and we know how that usually goes for us. Then something strange, wonderful, and completely unexpected started happening…..they started, and continued, WINNING!!
I know!!! I couldn’t believe it, either! Fuck you, paper bags!! I’m sporting my Saints shit proudly.
I know there was a lot of frustration when Adrian Peterson didn’t pan out (trade for a 6th round pick? really?), but the duo of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara seems to be working pretty damn well. Together, they’re averaging about 4.7 yards per carry. It’s not hard to spot why this is a boon to the offense: when defenses have to worry about a run game, it gives Drew Brees more room to do what he does best. He has one of the best completion percentages in the league. Special teams is even doing some great things with blocked kicks and TDs. Even weirder, though, is that there’s sparks of what seems to be good DEFENSE, and that’s a strange feeling as a Saints fan.
The fact that the Saints are on top of the NFC South right now has me happier than I have any right to be. I know full well it could come crashing down any moment, and my hopes for a playoff run will be dashed. But Saints fan not only know how to cook some good shit, we know how to enjoy the moment. And at this moment, New Orleans Saints fans are pretty damn happy.
