You read that headline right, if Alabama misses the College Football Playoffs it would be an absolute joke to all football fans, the game of football itself, and show that the playoff committee has no clue what the hell they’re doing.
I’ll first start by saying that I am NOT an Alabama fan. I bleed Aggie maroon through and through. So don’t think you can just shred me for being a biased fan boy because it couldn’t be further from the truth.
I’m also not an SEC fanatic. To be honest I wish that Texas A&M was still in the Big 12. I miss the in-state rivalries, the Thanksgiving game against Texas, and if I’m being completely honest I haven’t really felt any real connection to the SEC in the 6 years that the Ags have been a part of the conference.
So now that you officially know that I have no allegiances with the Crimson Tide, in fact I mostly hate them, you can understand that when I say they are by far the best team in college football, it’s as unbiased of a statement as can be.
With the advent of the College Football Playoff system, we were supposed to get something better than what the BCS was. They were supposed to better evaluate the talent at the top of the rankings, give the best 4 teams a shot at a title, and help give the smaller schools a chance if they somehow made it to the top. So far the system has lived up to the latter of the three, but the ability to truly evaluate the top talents in football isn’t really something they’ve been able to figure out yet.
How do we still live in a world where Nick Saban’s Alabama team loses one singular game to the #6 team and they drop all the way down to #5 in the AP and the Coaches Poll?
Clemson jumping up to the top I get. That makes sense because they’re also a pretty damn good team, with a decent number of good wins under their belt, and pretty solid strength of schedule. I don’t think they’re actually better than Alabama this year, but I get why they would move to #1.
But you’re going to sit there and tell me that Oklahoma is better than Alabama? Oklahoma? The team who lost to Iowa State, and struggled against the likes of Kansas State and Baylor, is better than Alabama?
Please sit there and try to convince me that Wisconsin and their cupcake schedule deserves to be in the playoffs over Alabama. I don’t care that they’re undefeated. If Wisconsin and Alabama played each other Wisconsin would be praying to the football god that is Nick Saban to have mercy on them by the middle of the 3rd quarter. It would be a blow out and everyone who isn’t a Badger fan knows it.
I’m being a little harsh, I know. I don’t mean to completely crap on these teams. Oklahoma deserves to be in the playoffs no matter what and Wisconsin has played really well this year, with a couple of great wins over Iowa and Michigan, but they just aren’t as good as the Crimson Tide.
I know you all might hate me right now… hell I hate myself for saying this. I cheered when Alabama lost. But we all know that penalizing Alabama like this for a late season loss, against the now #4 team, is ridiculous. Alabama loses to the now #4 ranked Auburn tigers and might not make the playoffs, but Oklahoma loses to Iowa “Ames is the Most Boring Place In The World” State and Clemson loses to Syracuse (they have a football team?) and somehow they are more deserving than Saban’s crew?
In the words of the great Larry David…
I’m sorry, that was a little abrasive, but at least you get where I’m at with this now.
Oh, and for any of you Miami fans who try to piggy back your team onto this excuse wagon, you lost to Pitt. Totally not the same thing, so you can go shut up and color.
Personally, my pre-Conference Championship CFB playoff picture would look like this:
The “Boohoo” Badgers don’t make my list because, even though they have 2 losses, Auburn beat two #1 teams this year and one of their losses was against the current top team in the nation, Clemson.
Also, Georgia doesn’t make my list because their schedule was complete ass just like Wisconsin. Three ranked matchups, only one against a top 10 opponent, and they lost that game. Oh wait, who did they lose it to? Oh yea, AUBURN. Also Georgia fans might be more annoying than Ohio State fans, so I’m really hoping they don’t make it.
All in all, I think the College Football Playoff Committee has done a pretty decent job since its inception in 2014, but we’re still seeing too many holdover ideals from the flawed BCS process. If a team looks better talent-wise, has better wins against better opponents, and has a proven track record of beating the pants off of everyone else, then a late season loss shouldn’t matter.
Why is college football the only sport where we penalize one minor hiccup late in an otherwise flawless season?
Everyone knows Alabama is the best team in the country and it really isn’t even close. If Alabama and Auburn played again today, do you have any doubt in your mind that Alabama would win?
So here’s to hoping the playoff committee makes the right decision. Conference championship game or no conference championship game, we’re not in the BCS era anymore. Let us watch the best team in college football compete for yet another nauseating national title. Alabama needs to be in the College Football Playoff because they’re the best, any other result would be an embarrassment to the sport.
